Legislative Update
Fall 2009
Health Care Reform
You cannot turn on a radio or TV or pick up a paper or magazine without an article about Michael Jackson or health care reform. So really the only thing I can tell you is it is TSTT (Too Soon To Tell) what is really in the health care reform package or who really killed Michael Jackson. As both a provider and consumer of health care I have very mixed feelings.
The provider side knows just how broken the system is. It pays for sick care not care to stay healthy, pays you to be in the hospital but not for your meds or care at home to stay out of the hospital. Individuals who have multiple chronic care conditions have fragmented care, directed by many physicians but understood and managed by no one.
As a consumer of health care I want it when I need or want it and at a fair and honest price. I don’t want to wait like our neighbors the Canadians.
One of the things that is a sure bet is that any bill that does come forward will be loaded with concessions and trade offs. As providers and consumers you will need to read as much as you can inform yourself and go with your conscious. Write or email your Senators and Congressmen they listen when you speak.
