Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s already February. Time seems to be flying by. I hope everyone had a happy holiday season.
The ARN conference was a huge success. There were over 1000 rehab nurses in attendance. Educational sessions and posters provided nurses with a wealth of information. Many vendors displayed their products and offered information about equipment and products. One of the highlights of the conference was having 3 WARN members receive awards. Anne Leclaire BSN, RN, CRRN received the role award for Clinical Nurse Manager, Terry Gion MS, RN, CRRN received the role award for Advanced Practice Nurse and Lisa Salamon MSN, RN, CRRN received an award for the RNF New Investigator Grant Recipient for her research on “Discharge Preparedness Instruments and Post Discharge Outcomes on Two Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.”
Our January 2012 WARN half day conference was a great success as well. Thanks to Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Institute for hosting the conference. The presentations on mobility, spasticity and tone provided useful information that is pertinent to our everyday life on rehab. The interactive program on positioning and transfers allowed nurses to experience the difficulties of incorrect techniques and the ease of using correct techniques when positioning patients in the bed and wheelchair as well as when doing bed to chair transfers. Thanks to Monica Diamond PT, MS, D/NDT, Laura Gaudynski OTR/L Jennifer Kennedy MD for these great presentations. Following the conference, nurses enjoyed a tour of the new general rehab and brain injury units. I also want to congratulate Mary Ann Kamps. She was the winner from the drawing and received free registration for the annual WARN conference in April 2012 at the Chula Vista.
The board members are currently reviewing and revising the WARN bylaws. The goal of this revision is to update our bylaws and have language that is consistent with ARN’s bylaws.
Don’t forget that there will be 3 board positions available for the upcoming year. The positions are president-elect, secretary/treasurer and program co-chair. You do not need experience to be on the board. Lots of support will be available to you as you transition into these roles. If you would like to nominate yourself or a peer, please go to the WARN website for the nomination forms. We would like receive the nominations by the end of March so a brief biography about the candidates can be posted on the WARN website prior to the elections. Elections will be held on April 16, 2012 at the WARN conference. Being a board member is a great opportunity for networking, planning conferences, and staying current on both ARN and WARN business. It’s been a great and fun experience for me. If you have questions about any of these board positions, please feel free to contact any board member.
We are still accepting nominations for the Rising Star and Nurse Excellence award. These nominations are also on the WARN website. The board welcomes these nominations and looks forward to presenting the winner at the April WARN conference.
