Sept. 1, 2011
As I finalize this letter, I’m looking out my window and realize fall will be here soon. It has always been my favorite time of the year. I love the colorful leaves and the cooler weather. Kids go back to school, which hopefully, will make our schedules a bit less hectic. And of course, we can’t forget that football season will begin soon!
I am looking forward to serving as President of WARN. This will be an exciting year for us. The board is continuing our work on the half-day and the all day conferences through 2012. WARN held a half-day conference at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield on Aug. 17, 2011. It was an incredibly good program on visual changes that occur from a traumatic brain injury and substance use and abuse in the state of Wisconsin. The speakers were great. Our next half-day conference is on Oct. 19, 2011, at Alexian Village in Milwaukee. The presentations are on Diabetic Wound Management and Patient Education. I hope to see you there.
Everyday, we work with dedicated nurses. These nurses strive for excellence in patient care. Although we don’t always express our gratitude to these nurses, we know we appreciate them and rely on them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one of the nurses you work with was recognized for the care they deliver to their patients and families or for advancing the practice of rehabilitation nursing? They can be!
Every year at our annual all day conference, WARN chooses a Rising Star. This is a nurse with less than 2 years of experience who demonstrates excellence in rehabilitation nursing. Although he/she is a young nurse, they stand out among other nurses for the care they provide to their patients and families and for striving towards excellence in nursing. WARN also chooses a Nurse Excellence Award recipient. This is a nurse with 2 or more years of experience who demonstrates excellence in rehabilitation nursing. Think about the nurses you work with. I’m sure you know a nurse that you feel deserves one of these awards, so consider nominating them. You can get the nomination forms (here) on the WARN website. Remember, it’s never too early to nominate someone.
Just a reminder, we are currently accepting nominations (here) for President Elect, Program Co-chair and Secretary/Treasurer. Nominations will be accepted through March 2012. If you have questions about any of these positions, please don’t hesitate to contact any of the board members.
Hope to see you at the October half-day conference. Also, don’t forget that the ARN conference is in Las Vegas this year from Nov. 2-5.
